  1.                    GRAPHICS PROGRAM DOCUMENTATION FILE

  3. This graphics package provides an easy means of generating data plots.  To
  4. use this software, copy all of the files into a sub-directory on your hard
  5. disk.  It is best to create a separate subdirectory for these programs.  Then
  6. type INSTALL and answer all questions.  The programs will then be installed
  7. and ready to use.  Type in PLOTHELP and read the OVERVIEW topic, and then
  8. run the demo program by typing in DEMO.  Then run some of the example plots
  9. as directed in PLOTHELP topic EXAMPLES.  Beyond this brief introduction, read
  10. the printed documentation and the help files.

  47. Advantages:           The programs are simple enough to plot a data file
  48.                       with a single command, yet powerful enough to generate
  49.                       extremely high-quality (textbook quality) plots on a
  50.                       laser printer.
  51.  
  52.                       Virtually all plot characteristics may be user defined,
  53.                       but default settings are included so that the user does
  54.                       not need to bother with unnecessary details.
  55.  
  56.                       All plot commands may be entered on the DOS command line.
  57.                       This allows a string of plot commands to be put in a
  58.                       batch file for execution without requiring constant user
  59.                       intervention.

  61. Disadvanteges:        Slow operation for some plots:  For high-resolution
  62.                       plots, the number of pixels which must be handled
  63.                       can be tremendous.  For example, a 2000 by 2500 pixel
  64.                       laser printer plot will have five million pixels which
  65.                       must be accounted for.  On a basic 4.77 Mhz 8088
  66.                       computer, handling this many pixels can take an
  67.                       annoyingly long time.  Even for a low-resolution plot,
  68.                       a large data file and slow disk drive will slow things
  69.                       down.

  71.                       Relatively steep "learning curve":  the software was
  72.                       written to be very easy to use.  This was accomplished
  73.                       at the expense of making it less easy to learn.  It is
  74.                       hoped that the help files and demo will ease the novice's
  75.                       difficulties.

  77. Liability:            The software is provided as is; the authors assume
  78.                       no liability for any problems arising from its use
  79.                       or misuse.

  84. Licensing:            Any user, registered or not, may use and distribute this
  85.                       software at will, PROVIDED:
  86.  
  87.                          1) the software is not modified,
  88.                          2) no part of the software may be sold for a charge

  91.                       When copying the software, please distribute only the
  92.                       original archived file (LASER.EXE).  This ensures that
  93.                       all users will obtain a full working copy.

  96.                       contribution will be appreciated.  Users contributing
  97.                       this amount will receive:
  98.                          - Program version supporting the math coprocessor
  99.                            and the use of laser software fonts

  102.                            conjunction with the plotting software; including
  103.                            a curve fitting routine and an FFT (Fast Fourier
  104.                            Transform) program.
